Tech: Meizu M3 Max Review: Insanely Good Value At $250

One thing I’ve learned since I began covering consumer tech this year is that marketing + clever packaging bring hype. And once you have all three together, you can get away with selling the product at jacked up prices, as long as the product isn’t terrible. When I first got my hands on the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 almost two months ago — back before the fires began and when every U.S. media was throwing every superlative praise at the phone — I made a  YouTube video  ranting about how, while the Note 7 was very nicely built, it wasn’t that much better built than Chinese phones that sold for half the price, like the OnePlus 3 or the Meizu MX6. I made a similar video  with the iPhone 7 Plus. My point is that, western tech media often act like Apple and Samsung (can add Google to the mix now, with the latest batch of Pixel reviews) craft the best “premium” hardware that are heads and shoulders above everyone else, when in reality, every 2016 flagship phone, regardless if it was des

Tech: Still Looking For Note 7 Replacement? Xiaomi's New Phone Offers The Look, Feel, With Much More Power

Chinese phone companies have developed a reputation, especially to western tech media, for its tendency to “borrow” hardware design cues from iPhones. While that stigma is not unearned, it’s a bit dated because some Chinese phonemakers, chief among them Huawei, have developed its own design language and style. (Conversely, when Apple or Google borrow ideas from Chinese companies, western media seem oblivious – just check out all the pieces gushing about the new iPhone’s dual-camera “bokeh” trick, or Google Pixel’s “swipe on the fingerprint sensor to pull down notifications” shortcut … Huawei’s P9 offered those things half a year ago). Plus, copying Apple is old news. Some Chinese companies have moved to Samsung for inspiration. Case in point: Xiaomi is set to announce a new phone on October 25, and as usual, all the key information about the device has leaked on Chinese social media, including its looks.  Follow Playfuldroid!   @playfuldroid Xiaomi Mi Not

Your Biggest Cybersecurity Weakness Is Your Phone

Mobile devices are one of the weakest links in corporate security. Executives are wrestling with managing a proliferation of devices, protecting data, securing networks, and training employees to take security seriously. In our  Tech Pro Research survey  of chief information officers, technology executives, and IT employees, 45% of respondents saw mobile devices as the weak spot in their company’s defenses. (Employee data was cited by 37%, followed by wireless access of networks at 34% and bring-your-own-device efforts at 29%.) Meanwhile, the potential for mobile attacks continues to expand. In July  com Score reported  that half of all digital time was spent on smartphone apps, and 68% percent of time was spent on a mobile device. If mobile security isn’t a problem for your company yet, it will be. Consider the following recent events: A flaw called “Quadrooter” left more than 900 million Android devices vulnerable to attacks. The code was published online. Google has sinc
