Easy Startup = Hard Success

Running a successful business isn’t rocket science. If it were, we wouldn’t have a thriving corporate world. But it’s not as easy as falling off a log, either. If that were true, we’d all be swimming in dough and having the time of our lives, which we’re not. If your work feels too easy, you’re going to have a really hard time making it. What about all those twenty-something millionaires you read about? You know, the self-proclaimed gurus and experts with all the nifty articles about 5 habits, 7 hacks, or 10 quotes that will take you straight to the land of unicorns? I’ll let you in on a little secret: They’re all full of it. No kidding. Somewhere between Elon Musk working 100-hour weeks running two companies and laying on a couch with a MacBook on your lap is the sweet spot for entrepreneurial success. And the closer you come to the former, the better your chances of actually making it. The tradeoff for business success goes something like this:  The easier it is to get star

10 Secrets to Great Wealth

If you Google “millionaire” and “secrets,” you get more than 10 million results. With so many articles on the subject, you might conclude there’s a big audience for that sort of thing, and you’d be right. And since you clicked on this headline, that probably includes you. Looks like I’ve reached the right audience and you’ve come to the right place. Perfect. Here’s the thing. With millions of writers and millions of readers, you might also conclude that none of that content is actually secret. Again, you’d be right. And get this. With rare exception, it’s all BS. This is not, and I’ll tell you why. I’m a veteran of the technology industry who spent decades working with countless executives and business leaders. We’re talking hundreds, if not thousands – all of whom did well for themselves. Very well. And since you won’t hear this advice from anyone but an insider like me, I guess we can legitimately call them “secrets.” Quit reading dumb articles like this one. Think I’m

10 Mindsets of a True Winner

While mentoring a very sharp young entrepreneur the other day, it occurred to me that most founders and small business owners are in business without any real idea of what it takes to be a winner. That’s why they follow the Richard Bransons and Mark Cubans of the world -- so they can understand how a successful person thinks. Unfortunately, thinking is just the beginning. Becoming successful over the long haul is just as much about listening to your gut than your ability to reason. It’s more about building relationships than understanding yourself. It’s more about experience and execution than ideas. And it’s more about doing than dreaming. All that begins with a mindset that defines how you behave. A mindset that leads to action is the mindset of a winner. This is the mindset of a winner: If I’m not the best, someone else is. Everyone talks about the importance of loving what you do, but if you’re one of a thousand doing the same thing the same way, you’re not going to lov

11 Tweaks To Your Morning Routine Will Make Your Entire Day More Productive

I don’t know anyone who couldn’t use a little boost in their energy, productivity,  and  self-control. Researchers at the University of Nottingham recently published findings from their exploration of 83 separate studies on energy and self-control. What they found will change the way you start your day. The researchers found that self-control and energy are not only intricately linked but also finite, daily resources that tire much like a muscle. Even though we don’t always realize it, as the day goes on, we have increased difficulty exerting self-control and focusing on our work. As self-control wears out, we feel tired and find tasks to be more difficult and our mood sours. This exhaustion of self-control kills your productivity, and it makes the morning hours, when self-control is highest, the most important hours of the day. But the trick isn’t just to spend your morning hours working; it’s to do the right things in the morning that will make your energy and self-control
