Microsoft Lumia 650: sophisticated, metal design and Windows 10 under $200 USD

As one of the leaders in our devices business, I’ve had the privilege of seeing firsthand transformation and progress across our Windows and Devices group. From Windows 10 to Surface Book to HoloLens, and PC-like productivity on Lumia 950 series, it is clearly now apparent that we have a portfolio of unique and productive Windows devices. One of the guiding principles of the devices vision is that it’s not just about the device itself, but what you’re able to get done with it. The simple fact is that the most personal device that we have to get things done is our phone. So the team and I are working tirelessly to make sure that we do our best to give you the most productive phones on the planet. At the end of 2015 we introduced the first Lumia devices running Windows 10 – Lumia 550,  Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL  – and  we’re thrilled at the response they’ve received . Now, here at the beginning of 2016, we’re excited to announce the new  Lumia 650  – our latest smartphone running

My dream is to put tech solutions in the hands of local entrepreneurs: Nadella

MUMBAI, :   Ever since Satya Nadella took over as the Chief Executive Officer of Microsoft he has brought in huge changes to the way the company saw things. Having missed technological shifts to newer rivals such as Google and Facebook, Nadella is on an overdrive to ensure that Microsoft stays ahead of the innovation curve. In a roundtable with select media, Nadella spoke about his vision. Edited excerpts: The Central government has launched various initiatives such as Make in India, Digital India. What’s your view on the envisioned success of these programmes? As a company, Microsoft is in it for the long term. Because when you think about the country and about the trajectory, I look at not only what’s happening in the government, but also what is happening in the private sector, what is happening in the broader economy as a whole, and that’s where my optimism comes from. Our economic model is fundamentally about digital technology in the hands of others — be it small

Windows 10 Upgrade to Become Automatic as a 'Recommended Update' in 2016

Microsoft is willing to go to great length to get you to upgrade to Windows 10. The company says that starting next year, every Windows 7 or Windows 8 user will see Windows 10 as a "recommended update" on their computer. The company also shared some changes it plans to make on how updates are sent to Windows 10 computers. Last month the company began to push Windows 10 to some Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 users as an "optional update". The company now says that starting in 2016, everyone using the aforementioned old versions of its software will see Windows 10 as a "recommended update". Depending on the user's Windows Update setting, the upgrade process will begin automatically, but the final switch between the new and old OS will only be flipped by the user, explains the blog post titled 'Making It Easier to Upgrade to Windows 10'. "A user will be presented with a choice to install Windows 10," Terry Myerson, Microsoft's hea

Google and Microsoft have totally different approaches to computing than Apple

In about two years, Android will look completely different. According to the Wall Street Journal , Google plans to merge Android with Chrome OS, its operating system for laptops called Chromebooks. When that happens, Android will be Google's unified operating system that runs on just about any device. Right now, Android runs on phones, tablets, smartwatches, TVs, smart appliances, and infotainment systems in cars, to name a few. Computers are the missing link. If that approach sounds familiar, that's because it's the same one Microsoft introduced this year with the launch of Windows 10. Windows 10 is designed to run on practically anything with a screen. (Phones, computers, TVs, and even the Xbox One.) But the unified operating system idea isn't an option at Apple - at least not yet. Apple still has two major separate operating systems, iOS (for iPhones and iPads) and Mac OS X (for laptops and desktop computers). And Apple wants to keep it that way.

10 things in tech you need to know today

1.  Google could see even more investigations from Europe's antitrust regulators.   Margrethe Vestager gave an interview in which she said that the EU is looking at a broad range of services from Google and parent company Alphabet. 2.  Microsoft has opened a big flagship store in New York.  This is what it's like inside. 3.  Apple will announce its Q4 results tonight.  Here's our big preview of what to expect. 4.  JPMorgan Chase & Co said it will launch a competitor to Apple Pay.  The largest US bank is launching software that will let customers pay for things using their smartphones, just like Apple Pay does. 5.  Google is about to get a lot more serious about designing and potentially building chips.  A job posting suggests that Google is expanding its hardware business. 6.  The European Parliament will vote today on net neutrality rules.  As well as rules on broadband speed, the proposals also include a plan to abolish mobile roaming charges. 7.  Poli

Here's what it's like inside Microsoft's massive new flagship store

From the moment a large white sheet blocking the public from seeing into the store was lifted Monday — right after Microsoft Chief Operating Officer Kevin Turner cut the ribbon on the new Fifth Ave. flagship in New York City — dozens of Microsoft employees were frantically jumping up and down in the windows. More than just a retail store conveniently located half a mile from Apple’s flagship, Microsoft’s three-floor storefront is meant to be like your rich friend’s house. The guy who let you play around with all of the new toys you never knew even existed. Its three floors are dedicated to personal computing and Dell (third floor), Xbox (second floor), and mobile devices (first floor). But it also felt like a building you wouldn’t normally associate with Pitbull concerts and multiple LCD TVs projecting alien combat: a library. “I see it as a library more than a store,” 19-year-old Rashon Byrd told me in the third floor Dell Experience section. Digital Trends Byrd,
