How India's Startups Are Feeding The Country's Unemployment Crisis

India is a country that is inhabited by more than 1.21 billion people, and by  2022  it is projected to replace China as the most populated nation in the world. This enormous size of its population has resulted in the difficulty of providing ample jobs to its citizens; the severity of the problem can be understood from the International Labor Organization’s (ILO) report titled  world employment social outlook , which states that the number of job seeking Indians is projected to reach 17.6 million people in 2017. Last year, the Chattisgarh Government’s Directorate of Economics and Statistics was barraged by  75,000  applicants for 30 peon jobs – a 14,000 Rupee position that involved basic tasks such as fetching tea. Amongst these queries many included requisitions from qualified engineers and management graduates. In 2011 around ten million Indians with graduate, post-graduate and technical degrees were looking for work. Unemployment rates were higher among the better qualified, a

6 Rules for Effectively Leading Your Globally-Distributed Team

The speed and security of the internet has created a global economy allowing companies and employees to work from anywhere that has connection to the web. Some companies have adopted a series of smaller remote offices while others corporate giants like Mozilla, Automattic and Upworthy operate completely on a distributed basis. The opportunity and even necessity to work remotely has grown tremendously. In 2014, the number of  remote or telecommuting job listings rose 26 percent , and continued substantial growth is predicted. Although it's tempting to become a globally distributed company for advantages such as decreasing overhead costs, management can be  tricky . During virtual meetings, technical issues can arise, and employees are easily distracted or mentally checkout. Keeping meetings timely, organized and equally open to all involved parties is even more challenging when done through virtual platforms. Additionally, a wide spread team means that not everyone is always w

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu says that his state clocked almost 11 percent growth in the last financial year, but that's not enough as far as he is concerned. He wants his state to clock 15 percent growth. In an exclusive conversation with CNBC-TV18's Shereen Bhan, Naidu whose government completed two years in office today asserts that his government has created over 1 lakh 20 thousand jobs in the last 2 years. He also said that his government has focussed in a big way on agriculture and horticulture.  Below is the transcript of Chandrababu Naidu's interview with CNBC-TV18's Shereen Bhan. Q: It has been a couple of months since you and I had a conversation. Since then the Andhra Pradesh Investment Summit has taken place and if my memory serves me correctly, about 331 MoUs were signed, proposals worth Rs 4.78 lakh crore that promised to create 10 lakh jobs. So, what has actually all of that translated in to actual reality  on the g

Ten Things Never To Say While Negotiating A Job Offer

In this new-millennium talent market we are all learning how to sell. We are learning that a job search is a sales and marketing process. If you get to the end of a recruiting pipeline and you get a job offer that is too low for you to accept, don’t get mad. Don’t be miffed or affronted. Mother Nature is tapping you on the shoulder. You missed a step somewhere. Unless the people you’re dealing with are unethical people who looked you in the eye and said “Yes, for the right person we can pay $80K” and then offered you $60K for the job and told you “Take it or leave it!” you missed a step somewhere. You have no time for unethical people, so there is no sense in negotiating with a hiring manager who tells you “I know we talked about $80K but I couldn’t get that much budget, so I’m making you this massively-discounted job offer, instead.” He or she should have told you about that earlier, before dragging you through the entire interview process! Walk away from a bad deal like
